TCA's TCA’s work by increasing the levels of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain by slowing down the rate of their reabsorption by certain nerve cells. You may see an improvement within 2 weeks however full benefits of the drug may not be noticed for 2-4 weeks. TCA’s are known to have more side effects than the newer class of antidepressant of SSRIs as they are not as selective in which nerve cells they target. They are usually prescribed after as SSRI has been trialled and considered unsuitable.
