MASSAGE AND DEPRESSION

There are a large number of potential causes for depression. Once, it was thought to be "all in one's head"—now we are beginning to realize just how incorrect that is. Genetics may predispose a person to depression, biochemistry may start or abet it and life events may trigger or worsen depression.

Many treatments are currently available to the depressed patient. Antidepressive medicines raise the level of certain Neuro chemicals, which offers relief to a number of patients. Psychological and behavioural therapies can aid a great number of patients as well.

The jury is still out as to how large a role massage can have in helping the depressed patient. The most vocal proponents of massage will likely claim they can see a 100% improvement given enough massage of the right sort. Much of the mainstream medical community has traditionally rejected massage as a treatment for depression, but that is changing.

Much medical research is beginning to lead to the conclusion that massage can have a major effect in reducing the symptoms of depression. Researcher said that while it is far too simplistic to say that massage can cure depression, it can certainly help us to better cope with, and improve, the quality of life.

It appears that massage stimulates the body to eliminate toxins and secrete certain hormones and brain chemicals. This further enhances a positive mood. The skin and muscle are densely packed with nerves which play directly into the central nervous system (in fact, they develop from the same set of cells in fatal life). Many researchers feel that this intimate link between skin and brain gives a clue about the origin of the "power of touch."

There are some researchers who believe that massage alone can bring depression to heel quickly and without unwanted side effects. Whatever the case, no one denies that massage is a healthful way to care for yourself.

If you feel that you may be experiencing symptoms of depression, don't wait --- seek medical advice today. Whether or not you supplement your treatment with massage, do not hesitate to get help for your depression. It is too serious to ignore!

Make massage part of your preventative health care plan. Realign your body, mind, and spirit.
