Men's Line Australia, the first national men's telephone counselling service, was officially launched on September 26, 2001. Men's Line Australia is a
24 hour – 7 days a week telephone counselling, information and referral service for men with family and relationship concerns. The service is part funded
by the Commonwealth Department of Family and Community Services as another strategy in the Department's Men and Family Relationships Initiative launched
in 1997 in order to strengthen men in their family relationships and address the growing health and wellbeing concerned for men dealing with separation.
There are 50,000 legal separation is Australia annually. Of these 60%-70% are initiated by women. This initiative is a response to community concern about
the high suicide rate, depression, violence and other dysfunctional responses to grief and loss experienced by men. A study of 4000 suicides by Griffith
University found that 70% of adult male suicides were caused by relationship breakdowns. Research has also found that separated men have a suicide
rate about 6.2 times that of married men, and about 12 times that of separated women.
Men's Line Australia aims to provide support for men experiencing difficulties in their relationships with partners, ex-partners, children and stepchildren. The
service provides information about support services in their locality, practical strategies for self-care and facilitates referral to appropriate organisations and
programs. It does not provide legal advice to callers. Women and other family members concerned with male relatives or friends are also encouraged to call
and talk it over. Calls from anywhere in Australia are at the cost of a local call.
Men's Line Australia is operated by Personal Emergency Services (PES), a non profit community based organisation located in Melbourne. PES currently
operates CareRing - Your Crisis Line and Suicide Helpline Victoria. Both paid and volunteer staff will staff the new service.
