ADJUSTING TO THE DIAGNOSIS OF BIPOLAR DISORDER:

 ONLINE HELP

Bipolar disorder is typically poorly detected, with studies in the US and Australia showing that correct diagnosis can take up to 20 years.  Individuals often report feeling shocked on the one hand, but relieved on the other, when they receive a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and many go through a period of disbelief during which they may fail to take prescribed medication.  Clinical experience has shown that once patients accept their diagnosis and learn about bipolar disorder, they start to see bipolar disorder in a different light, developing strategies to control their condition, instead of it controlling them, with the aim of leading a pleasurable and meaningful life.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales are evaluating an online psycho-education program designed to help people with newly-diagnosed bipolar disorder take control of their condition and stay well with bipolar disorder.  People participating in the research study receive the online education program over 8 weeks, one 30-minute module per week.  Some of the participants, in addition, receive email assistance from ‘Informed Supporters’, people with Bipolar Disorder who are effectively controlling their illness and trained to offer practical advice and support via email.

To be eligible to take part in the study, people need to have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the last 12 months, have a managing health professional whom they see regularly, have a regular email address and access to a computer and the internet, can undertake 8 weekly sessions on their computer, will complete questionnaires on 4 occasions, are aged over 18 and live in Australia.

The researchers are interested in hearing from anyone who would like to take part.  For further information, contact Dr Judy Proudfoot on This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or phone (02) 9382 3767.
