Deborah Perrott, a PhD student in the Linguistics Program at Monash University is conducting a research project into Adolescent Communication: Pragmatic Skills. She is being supervised by Dr. Keith Allan and Dr. Anna Margetts based at the Linguistics Program, Monash University. How can I be involved in the research project? You are invited to be part of a study that is looking at the communication skills of young people who have depression. - The two groups in the research include a group of adolescents who have depression (20) and a group who do not (20). A total of 40 people will participate in the research project in Victoria.
- You are asked to participate in an interview including yourself & the researcher that will last no longer than one hour. During this interview Deborah will be asking what you think about your communication skills.
- The aim of the research is to investigate how you as a young person perceive and use some of your communication skills. The research will compare and contrast the communication skills of depressed and non-depressed adolescents. This will be achieved by asking questions about how you believe you communicate and how you use your communication skills.
- This is an opportunity to discuss any areas of ability or difficulty relating to communication. All participants will be asked some questions about depression before participating in the interview.
- This is a fact finding investigation and no critical evaluation of your abilities will be made. We are interested in young people's communication. In particular, what you say and how you say it. We shall not be making a critical judgement of your abilities to communicate.
How do I get to know the results of the research? - An article including the results of the research will be posted on the depressioNet site at the conclusion of the research.
- The outcome of the study will be discussed in a PhD thesis. In the thesis and any other written materials or publications relating to the study your identity will remain anonymous.
- If you would like a written summary of the results of the research this can be forwarded to you via post or e-mail.
Where will the interviews will be held? In the Knox area at: Cortex Counselling & Consulting Kingsley Terraces Unit 5/Level 1 430 Burwood Highway Wantirna South, VIC, 3152 (Opposite the Knox City Shopping Centre)
